In-Depth Interview
January 14, 1997

Sarah: What are the differences between last years Vulcan team and this Buc team? (Jake played for the Vulcans last year).

Jake Searles: Well, last year was my first year in the league and it took time to get used to get used to. Last year all the kids were from the cities, I already knew them all going into the season, so it was easier going into the season. It was like playing summer hockey again. This year is actually better, you get away from home, you meet knew people, and get out of your town so you can concentrate on hockey more than you would back home.

Sarah: So what brought you down here?

J. Searles: Last year was a learning year. Coach Johannson didn't know if I'd play a lot up there again, so I called Coach Owens and he said "yes, come on down."

Sarah: How does it feel to go from scoring all of two goals last year, to already scoring 8 goals this season and double the assists.

Searles: Well it's a lot better. By this time I had hoped to have more goals than what I have, but it's step from last year. I'm playing a lot better and a lot more than last year. So if I keep going maybe by the end of the season I'll have fifteen more points, or twenty. I'm on a good line with Derek and Pete Fregoe. I'm just having more fun, it helps my playing.

Sarah: How old where you when you started and why did you start?

Searles: I started when I was three. I have a pond by my house. My parents just got me some skates and put me on the ice just like all the other kids around the neighborhood. I just started skating with those guys and probably started association hockey when I was five.

Sarah: Did you ever play any other position than your current one?

Searles: Usually I play center, but this year coach said I'd have to play wing. I don't mind and now I'm adjusted to it so I can play either center or wing.

Sarah: Do you have a favorite pro or college team?

Searles: I don't know about pro, but for a college team I like the University of Minnesota. Growing up I always watched the University of Minnesota play and now a lot of my friends play there. So probably the Gophers.

Sarah: What else do you like to do besides hockey?

Searles: In the summer, I live by a lake, so I like to jet ski. I play golf, water ski in the summer, usually snow ski, but not this year.

Sarah: Do you have a nickname?

Searles: No.

Sarah: If you had a million dollars what would you do with it?

Searles: I have no idea. Probably by a nice house, a nice car, and put the rest away.

Sarah: Tell me about some of your goals for the future.

Searles: For school I'm undecided. Hopefully get a scholarship to a division I school. Go to school there and get a good education.

Sarah: And the last thing, what would the fans be surprised to know about you?

Searles: That the reason I cut my hair is because Coach made me.
